New Scholarship Announced for IPS Students

The Indianapolis Colts have partnered with The Art Institute of Indianapolis, Mayor Greg
Ballard, Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) and The Penrod Society to create the Legacy
Art Initiative. The Legacy Art Initiative has multiple phases which will benefit the arts
culture in Indianapolis and the opportunities in the arts for students of Indianapolis. The
organizations partnered together with the goal of leaving a lasting legacy in the
community for generations to enjoy and are proud to be part of a program that coincides
with their missions.

Phase one of the Legacy Art Initiative allowed IPS students in grades K-12 to express
themselves in a creative way. Each IPS school created a 3’ x 4’ canvas to be displayed in
Lucas Oil Stadium. Each canvas shows a combination of passion for art and pride for
Indianapolis. In total, there are 64 canvases painted by students from IPS schools that
span nearly 2/3 of a mile inside the Lucas Oil Stadium northwest ramp system. “The one
thing I liked most was the professional canvas we worked on,” said School #43 student
and young artist Terrence Strong. “I am excited that it will be displayed in Lucas Oil
Stadium, and that so many people will see it.”

The theme “The Best of Indianapolis” gave IPS students the opportunity to express what
they love the most about their hometown through art. David McGimpsey, President of
The Penrod Society, said, “The Penrod Society is proud to be a partner in the Legacy Art
Initiative. The Legacy Art Initiative fits perfectly within The Penrod Society’s mission to
support cultural and educational opportunities available here in Central Indiana.”

The theme allowed students to be creative with their ideas. The students were allowed to
choose their favorite part about Indianapolis, ranging from buildings, sports, nature and
beyond. The goal of the theme is for students to embrace and love Indianapolis. Students
were excited about the theme and anxious to show off the greatest parts of Indianapolis.
Gambold Middle School student Jean Thompson said, “I feel honored that we did really
great and that every student who painted on the canvas tried very hard. I feel especially
proud of how we represented the theme.”

Stephen Collins Foster Elementary School art teacher Phyllis Lish agreed that students
were excited about the theme. Lish commented on student Tamara Mansfield’s painting,
saying, “I believe Tamara’s design encompassed all the wonderful things available in the
city that promote fun family event.”

Participation in the Legacy Art Initiative has been beneficial for all IPS students
involved. “Our students have been very empowered to excel as young artists through the
creation of works of art for the Indianapolis Public Schools’ exhibition at the Lucas Oil
Stadium,” Pamela Denny-Rohrbach, IPS District Director of Visual Arts says, “The
public will see the city through the eyes of a child and will sense the quality of
wonderment!”

IPS students will continue to benefit from the Legacy Art Initiative as a design
competition is unveiled whereby one outstanding IPS graduating high school senior
interested in studying commercial arts will earn a tuition scholarship from The Art
Institute of Indianapolis.

The Art Institute of Indianapolis has been a member of the Indianapolis community since
2006 and is a proud partner of the Legacy Arts Initiative. Madeleine Slutsky, President of
The Art Institute of Indianapolis, believes that art plays an important role in the
Indianapolis culture, economy and overall quality of life. “While we are newer to the city
of Indianapolis, we understand the responsibility of our school to be a contributor to the
needs of the community,” said President Slutsky. “Offering opportunities for students to
turn their artistic passion into a thriving career is the mission of The Art Institute of
Indianapolis. That is why The Art Institute of Indianapolis is excited to provide a full
scholarship to one Indianapolis Public High School senior every year of the project.”

The Indianapolis Colts believe that giving back to the community is an important part of
any organization. Each year, the Colts hold hundreds of events that help give back to the
community. The Legacy Arts Initiative is just one of the programs the Colts participate in
to leave a lasting legacy in Indianapolis. “We are very proud to be involved in the arts
initiative with IPS students and excited to display their works of art in Lucas Oil
Stadium,” said Pete Ward, Indianapolis Colts Senior Executive Vice President.

“We are extremely excited about the relationship with The Art Institute of Indianapolis,
Mayor Greg Ballard, Indianapolis Public Schools and The Penrod Society to make
available the #1 sports facility in the world to be the canvas to display the talents of IPS
students,” said Tom Zupancic, Indianapolis Colts Senior Vice President of Sales and
Marketing. “We are proud to have millions of people from around the world view the
artistic efforts of these amazing works of art.”
